Radio Design to filter out 4G interference
A West Yorkshire company has won a contract to supply filters that will prevent potential interference with terrestrial digital television signals from 4G mobile broadband.
Shipley-based Radio Design Ltd will provide RF filters to at800, the company responsible for ensuring free-to-air television broadcasts are still available once the enhanced internet capacity is launched.
New 4G services could cause problems to terrestrial digital television signals such as sound loss, pixilated images or loss of channels altogether.
Ofcom has estimated that around 10% of households in the UK could be affected, and will need support from tools such as the filters that Radio Design will supply.
In most cases, an RF filter will stop interference from 4G services and allow viewers to continue receiving and watching television as normal when the broadband becomes available later this year.
Eric Hawthorn, managing director of Radio Design, commented: “This is a great opportunity to show that high technology manufacturing can be successful in the UK. We are very pleased to be able to support at800.”
The company has a presence in China, Finland and India, where it provides wireless infrastructure sharing solutions and RF filter designs.
