Rise of "5-to-9ers", the day job entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurial Brits with day jobs are increasingly working after work and at weekends to get their own businesses off the ground.

A survey of 2,926 people by Nectar Business found 68% of those wanting to start their own business aim to work eight hours or more a week on their ideas.

The most popular business ideas are jewellery and craft stores, and restaurants and cafes. Hobbyist entrepreneurs are keen to start their businesses for a variety of reason, particularly to make money; be their own boss; and create a family business.

The research suggests a slight rise in female “5-to-9ers,” who are most likely to be 35-44 year olds from the South East or London, working in education, retail or healthcare and social work.

Interestingly, just 16% of those wanting to start a business, want to do so within their current employment sector.

Star of BBC1’s The Apprentice and a judge at the Nectar Business, Small Business Awards, Karren Brady, commented: “This research is really encouraging and shows that Brits are more determined than ever to reach their business potential – even giving up their precious spare time to do so.

“The UK has grown some of the greatest entrepreneurs in the world; it really is the land of ingenuity and I’m proud to be able to celebrate this with the Nectar Business Small Business Awards.”
