Darlington recycling company unveils £1.5m expansion

A fast-growing Darlington recycling company has announced a £1.5m expansion to create new jobs and services.

Total Recycling Services Ltd has added a new recycling centre, hazardous waste transfer station and testing laboratory to their facilities.

The ambitious expansion went ahead following backing from Yorkshire Bank’s Tees Valley Business & Private Banking Centre in Stockton.

Total Recycling Services contributed £700,000 investment from its own funds into the new facilities, with the remaining £800,000 from Yorkshire Bank.

The company, based on the Yarm Road Business Park, provides recycling services across the North East, and also specialises in hazardous waste disposal and tanker cleaning throughout the UK.

The new Hazardous Waste Transfer Station will operate under a bespoke license from the Environment Agency.

Total Recycling Services, saw its turnover grow to £6.4m in 2012, and expects to reach a turnover of £8m in 2013

It has doubled staff to 40 since its launch in 2009 and created 16 new jobs last year..

Alex Foreman, Total Recycling Services Ltd founder and managing director, said: “Our specialist and comprehensive services enable our customers to enhance their own eco-credentials and this is driving growth and the provision of new services.

“Our position in the market is unusual in that we can handle every type of waste treatment and recycling without the need to subcontract, whereas most businesses specialise in managing either hazardous or non-hazardous materials.

“The Recycling Distribution Centre will enhance our zero-to-landfill policy.

“The Hazardous Waste Transfer Station will enable us to bulk-up, treat and neutralise hazardous waste to make it non-hazardous; cutting our disposal costs by 25 per cent.

“We are also launching a new purpose-built laboratory which will enable us to test ‘unknown’ waste so it can be disposed of in the most appropriate way.

“Among our future plans is a hazardous drum cleaning service for clients to aid re-use.

“We have been with Yorkshire Bank since our launch in 2009, and it has been fantastic in its understanding of our business and commitment to support our growth.

“I’ve had numerous approaches from other banks but would never consider switching.”

Yorkshire Bank’s Growing Business campaign, launched last autumn, is a package of initiatives including fee-free loans and overdrafts, a £1 billion Business Expansion Fund and 24 months free banking for start-up

David Allenson, commercial banking relationship manager at Yorkshire Bank’s Tees Valley Business & Private Banking Centre, said: “Waste management is a significant commercial growth area as we all become more conscious about the environment.

“Total Recycling Services is at the forefront of the industry, and Yorkshire Bank is pleased to be supporting its growth.

“We are very much open for business and looking to support growing businesses in the region with the right investment proposition.”
