North East firm joins Meddo to give localservice

A maintenance company based on Tyneside is aiming to grow its operations across the North of England after becoming a member of Meddo, a national consortium-style property repair and improvement business.

Maintenance Network Ltd already operates across the North East and Cumbria, providing specialist maintenance to largely blue chip clients, including housing associations.

As part of Meddo, which has partner companies in Scotland, the North West, Lincolnshire, the West Midlands, North and East London, North and West London and the Home Counties, the company will enhance its ability to deliver larger contracts across the North of England.

Meddo launched its operation UK in March 2012 with businesses across five of those areas. Maintenance Network Ltd is the second new addition since that date and will now operate under the Meddo brand.

Jesmond-based Maintenance Network was founded in 2006 by John Courtney and became a limited company in 2009. It now has a turnover of £800,000 and employs 14 staff, including 12 tradespeople; nine on Tyneside and three in Cumbria.

The national business is built on the foundations of well established regional businesses operating in the sector, giving them the support of a national lead company and each other.

Each regional business retains a high level of autonomy to continue providing the high quality of service for which they have been chosen. In addition, they now receive the support of a national firm and a network of other specialists to assist them with matters such as recruitment, training and development, health and safety, and purchasing as well as sharing ideas including best practice.

Joining Meddo means the business will enjoy the benefits of an innovative consortium structure; the regional businesses each owning a share in the national company, which in turn owns a minority stake of the partner company. This has substantial advantages for raising finance, incentivising performance, sharing costs and it is tax efficient.

John said: “In the six years since I founded the company, I am proud of what we have achieved. Joining Meddo will enable us to go to the next level, drawing upon the network of like-minded maintenance companies to offer a national service to existing and new clients.”

Mitchell Smith, who supports Meddo’s operations across the North of England, said: “Maintenance Network is a business I have known for a long time, so the opportunity to bring the company into Meddo was one which we grabbed with both hands. Meddo is built upon high quality service, something which runs through all of the company in the network, and John and his team will be a strong addition to our business.”
