Hewitt?s helps fight back against fuel poverty
A NORTH East plumbing, heating and electricals firm is aiming to ensure that people in the region don’t miss out on a government-backed scheme to fight fuel poverty.
Under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, low income and vulnerable households may be eligible for a free boiler replacement to help them cut their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.
Households which have a broken boiler and its inhabitants claim state pension credit or certain income and disability benefits are those the scheme is being targeted at.
In the North East, Bishop Auckland-based Hewitt’s is an accredited delivery partner of the scheme and is keen to ensure that people eligible for a free boiler don’t miss out.
Director Craig Hewitt said: “The free boiler under the ECO scheme is a fantastic offer but not much has been done to raise awareness about it.
“At Hewitt’s we want to help people in fuel poverty across the North East and a new boiler could help them cut their energy bills by 30% - or around £300 per year. Since most boilers are inefficient, they can help save the environment too.”
Hewitt’s has also recently moved into a new headquarters in Clyde House on Gibbon Street, Bishop Auckland, which is four times the size of its former home.
The company, which employs 62 people, also recently acquired an electrical business and, on the back of the deal, has diversified its offering to include mechanical and electrical engineering.
The firm is working on projects with a number of residential properties known as ‘extra care’ homes – where residents have independence but with added support from carers should they need it.
