Hummersknott Academy students challenge businesses to charity tennistournament

Hummersknott Academy in Darlington is challenging local businesses to a fun game of tennis to raise vital funds for a local charity.

Businesses are now being invited to throw their rackets into the contest which will take place during Wimbledon fortnight. The mixed doubles tennis tournament, which will take place on Thursday June 27 between 5.30pm and 8.30pm, will see students take on ten teams of business people from around the North East with proceeds going to St Teresa’s Hospice, an independent charity which provides care and support across South Durham and North Yorkshire to patients with terminal illnesses.

Pat Howarth, Principal at Hummersknott Academy, said: “The students have been working very hard in preparation for the event. As a school, we are delighted to support local causes and raise money on behalf of such a worthwhile charity. “We would like to thank all the business people taking part and working towards making the day a huge success. We are very proud of the hard work and efforts that the students have put in.”

Hospice Director Jane Bradshaw said: “We are thrilled that the students of Hummersknott Academy have decided to raise money for St Teresa’s Hospice. Every penny donated makes a huge difference to the lives of the people we care for, and the hard work the students are putting in is truly appreciated by all our patients, volunteers and staff. We’re sure it’ll be a smash!”

Jess Hartley, a student at Hummersknott Academy said: “We are really looking forward to the tournament. It will be a really enjoyable event but, more importantly, it will raise vital funds for an excellent cause.”
