Record growth follows move

Within a year of moving into new, self-built headquarters, a Northumberland firm’s offices and depot are filled to capacity following an unprecedented period of growth.

Turnover and staff at Dilston based JC&C have more than doubled as the company secured contracts with new clients in new areas of work.

Historically a drainage business, JC&C has added civil engineering skills to its portfolio and this has helped win projects with Akzo Nobel in Ashington, on the Doxford Ringway road, at Ryhope Hospital and the RVI redevelopment in Newcastle which together are worth around £3 million.

As a result, turnover for the current year – ending in July – will reach over £7.5 million. Last year it was £2.9 million. Not surprisingly, a business which a little over a year ago employed 30 people now has over 80 employed throughout the North East.

The expansion has been overseen by Managing Director Mark Gibson and Operations Director Michael Stewart, Mark said: “Growth was always the aim but it has come much faster than we expected. What is particularly encouraging is that much of it has been in groundworks and civils which are services we have recently added to the portfolio.

“Our main focus going forward is to maintain our new position and win repeat business with our new clients and build on the good reputation which we have established over recent years. What we will be investing in is people, through the creation of more jobs and apprenticeships and through training to improve the skills of the workforce.”

The £1 million move, from Tinklers Yard in Corbridge to the former Dilston Sawmill site was masterminded by Chris, Miles and John Joyce who own the firm their father started in 1948: “The focus was originally on agricultural drainage and haulage but over the years we’ve added new skills to the team and moved into new areas,” said Chris: “This last year has brought unprecedented growth for which Mark and the team deserve great credit.”

In parallel with achieving record growth the business has also achieved ISO Quality Standard 9001, the Environmental Standard ISO 14001 and the Safety Standard OHSAS 18001. It is also a member of the contractors’ health and safety assessment scheme.

Its portfolio of services includes:

  • Preparation of groundworks and sub-structure works
  • Kerbing and road surfacing
  • Main contractor building works
  • Deep drainage works
  • Tunnel and shaft work
  • Hard and Soft landscaping
  • Rising Main work
  • Attenuation work
  • Consultation on drainage solutions
