ESG claims BCIA Awards Best Energy Management category

Building Automation Solutions (BAS), part of the Energy Solutions Group (ESG), was named winner of the Energy Management Award at the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) awards.

The Altrincham-headquartered company won the award for the latest phase of its work with Coventry University, during which it managed an upgrade of the institution’s building energy management system (BEMS), delivering energy savings of over £170,000 per year.

ESG beat tough competition from BMSi, Electrical and Mechanical Controls (EMC) and RSP Consulting Engineers to scoop the award.

The BAS team has worked with Coventry University for over 30 years, having installed its first Building Energy Management System (BEMS) back in 1980.

Brin Sheridan, chief operating officer at ESG, said: “The impressive energy savings this project has delivered demonstrates the importance of centralised control in running an effective energy management programme.

“As well as presenting a technical challenge, this is also a management challenge which requires a change of mind-set from employees who have become used to being in control of systems and may have developed bad habits in terms of wasting energy.

“It is testament to the skill of the team that the transition was carried out with no interruption to day-to-day operations of the university”.

“The savings also demonstrate the importance of periodically reviewing and upgrading control systems in order to ensure they keep pace not only with rapid advances in technology but also with changes in the way buildings are used, which have a huge bearing on the effectiveness of energy management”.

“We are looking forward to continuing to work with the university in the years ahead as we work towards realising the final goal of the project – a fully integrated energy management platform which combines both the Energy monitoring and BMS control functions, which are currently managed separately.

“This final stage will allow systems to adapt in response to a detailed, real-time picture of energy performance across the estate, further optimising performance”.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at BAS and within Coventry University’s estates team for all their hard work in making this project such a success.”

Building Automation Solutions (BAS) was formed from Siemens Building Technologies in 2006, initially employing 186 staff. It became part of the Energy Solutions Group (ESG) when it was created following investment by Bridgepoint Development Capital in 2010.

The business has grown rapidly and now has a turnover of £52m and more than 400 employees across 10 regional offices in the UK and is the UK’s leading provider of total energy management solutions. ESG also has growing international presence from Paris to Washington and Dubai.
