Social media and finding your niche

It’s Entrepreneurship Week on Bdaily. Kasim Malik, managing director of COMPUTER OrBIT and creator of social networking site, carflash.com, explains here how important finding a niche market is to run and manage a successful social network.

Why is social media so important to you and our society?

Social media and digital platforms are showing no signs of slowing down – it’s the most popular way many of us communicate nowadays. With the continued interest in social media from people around the globe, particularly for niche interests such as food or art and of course automobiles - I spotted a gap in the market to create a communication platform for people who love their cars and want to connect with others who feel the same.

Why cars?

I have an interest in all types of cars which developed from an early age, and I particularly enjoy driving elite and luxury vehicles. For me, there’s nothing quite like driving a supercar! My entrepreneurial nature has never allowed me to stand still for very long and the idea for Car Flash came to me during a long drive to London. The more I spoke to people about cars and our shared love of them, the more I thought ‘why isn’t there a cool place to talk about this passion online?’ Yes, there are forums but there’s nowhere that I know of that is very visual and that engaging. So, I saw this as an opportunity to combine my primary passion of cars with my skills as a businessman operating in the digital sector to create a unique and innovative social network all centred around cars. If people love the subject then the more likely they are to engage.

Tell us a little more about your business.

Car Flash is a free digital platform for the public to indulge their driving passions online. With the 24/7 world we now live in there can be a lot of online noise on other social networks and a sense of information overload. Car Flash is completely different in that it is specifically about motors. This means, that for people who are interested in cars, there are no more irrelevant stories in daily news feeds, just great car images and news.

The site is targeted at everyone who owns and loves their vehicle or for those who simply have an interest in cars. Whatever make or model of car you own, whether it’s a Mini or Lamborghini, as long as you are proud of it then you will enjoy using Car Flash.

It’s still very early days but so far so good. Development of the site is ongoing, but feedback from users has been positive and of course we always welcome more.

What are your plans or ambitions for the future?

I’ve always approached the development of Car Flash as a multi-phased project; I already have plans to do so much more with Car Flash which will continue to grow and develop to become an established global brand. Specific plans are strictly confidential at this stage so all I can really say is - watch this space.
