BIM Academy receives accolade for 'special innovation'
Cutting edge digital organisation, BIM Acadamy has received recognition for ‘special innovation’ in the Constructing Excellence North East Awards.
BIM Academy earned the accolade through its use of cutting edge digital technologies in an international design competition.
The annual award from Constructing Excellence highlighted the significance of Build Qatar Live – a 48 hour competition to design and virtually build a Museum of Architecture, on a man-made island 120 metres off the coast of Doha.
Constructing Excellence is a forum enabling people from across the construction industry to share best practice.
BIM Academy, a collaboration between Northumbria University and Ryder Architecture established in 2010, used state of the art Building Information Modelling (BIM) through a cloud-based collaboration portal to secure their win which the judges described as having “international significance”.
The judges were also impressed with “the innovation and creative thinking of Build Qatar Live and the use of multidisciplinary working” and that “BIM Academy is strong and of its moment with the BIM agenda”.
BIM is a digital process involving the coordinated development of smart data about a building project throughout its entire lifecycle.
The BIM Academy Build Qatar Live team comprised senior academics and technologists from Ryder (architectural design), Cundall (services and structural engineering) Mott Macdonald (pedestrian analysis) NBS (specification / data migration), Colour UDL (landscape design) and Turner and Townsend (cost management).
Peter Barker, managing director of BIM Academy, said: “We’re delighted to receive this accolade for our pioneering work in this area.
“We’ve shown how BIM can bring real value to the delivery of projects in the built environment and that this is as much about collaborative working as it is about technology.
“We’re proud to contribute to the north east’s growing reputation for expertise in this field against international competition.”
