Hair apprentices compete in regional WorldSkills final

Budding north east hair and beauty apprentices have battled it out in a regional final of the Northumbria and Durham Training Provider WorldSkills International competition.

Thirty apprentices put their skills to the test in front of a panel of judges at an event hosted by training provider network, Northumbria Learning Providers (NLP).

Winners from preliminary heats took part in 10 competition categories including blow dry and finish, colour and nail art. The age groups were 14 to 23 years who are working towards apprenticeships, under-19 intermediate and advanced apprentices and 19+ intermediate and advanced apprentices.

The contestants were all learners from five local training providers - BL Training, 1st Degree Training (NEETA), HABIT, Barnado’s Palmersville Training and Trade Training.

Managing director of 1st Degree Training and vice chair of Northumbria Learning Providers, Susan Briganti, said: “We’ve seen some amazing hair styles and nail art created in this competition - the standard has been extremely high. By ensuring our local young people take part in World Skills Competitions International we are helping to celebrate and raise awareness of apprenticeships on a global stage.”

The prizes were sponsored by Ray & Co, Hair North East, Paul Mitchell, Regis, Walnut Hair and Beauty and The Nicola Taylor Experience.
