SCM apprentice celebrates double award win
An apprentice at Strategic Corrosion Management, the international corrosion management specialist, has been rewarded for his excellent IT skills after picking up two prestigious awards.
Michael Stokoe, 22, from Cramlington received the awards from Northumberland College, where he is studying towards a Level Three apprenticeship Diploma in Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals, alongside his IT Support Technician position at SCM.
He collected the World Skill Challenge award from the college, after the IT department held a competition for its students to carry out various IT-related tasks. Michael amassed the most points from completing the tasks out of all the IT students that took part in the challenging competition.
In addition to Michael’s World Skill Challenge award, he was also chosen as the winner of the college’s prestigious Paul Van Cliff award, which is awarded to students who excel in IT, for his exploits in the competition.
Michael previously attended Newcastle College before being recruited by SCM in October of last year, where he supports the business’ in-house software developments and assists SCM’s offshore teams with technical issues.
Michael said: “I was very surprised, but delighted to have won both awards. When the points totals were read out I thought I had missed out, but when I was named as winner I was thrilled.
“To also be recognised by winning the Paul Van Cliff award was really pleasing too because it is an honourable award here at the college. I am progressing on track both at college and with SCM so things are going really well for me at the minute.”
Ian Cordingley, Managing Director of SCM, said: “Everyone here at SCM is pleased for Michael because he is a very skilled young man, who possesses considerable IT and web development knowledge.
“Michael has continually demonstrated his IT talent at SCM ever since he has been here and this recognition is fully deserved.
