Newcastle bed manufacturer celebrates over 100 years business

Newcastle bed manufacturer, Palatine Beds, is celebrating over 100 years in business in the city.

The firm are known for manufacturing retail and contract mattresses in their 150,000 sq ft factory on Stamfordham Road in Westerhope.

In June 2012 Palatine, which is run by Your Homes Newcastle, launched their new luxury brand called ‘1907’ - a name derived from the firm’s birthday.

In 1907, North East property developer George Handyside bequeathed £10,000 to Newcastle City Council on the provision that it was used to set up an adult workshop for the blind, and so Palatine Beds was opened.

Since the launch of the new line last year, the business have seen customers’ average spend increase by over 40%.

Andrew Waters, sales and marketing manager at 1907 said: “We are pleased that we have had a strong volume of sales even though the retail climate is tough at the moment.

“The new brand has been very successful since it launched a year ago, customers have said they love the new modern 1907 showroom and they think it is fantastic to be able to purchase a luxury mattress that was handcrafted right here in the North East.

“The impact on the staff has also been very positive they have embraced the changes to the business and are excited to see their brand compete with some leading high street retailers.

“We hope that local people can come along to the 1907 showroom and help us to celebrate our first year anniversary, there will be special birthday offers in-store from 19th to 24th June 2013.”
