Sports Direct rescue North West camping retailer
Widnes-based camping and outdoor retailer Gelert has been acquired by Sports Direct Mike Ashley’s International.
The majority of Gelert’s business and assets has been rescued by the sports retailer which already has a portfolio of sport, fashion and lifestyle brands.
Grant Thornton’s Manchester office advised on the deal after David Riley and Les Ross were appointed as administrative receivers on June 21.
The value of the deal has not be disclosed but will secure around 100 jobs in Wales and the North West.
Mr Riley said: “Gelert is a well-established brand and we are delighted to have been able to secure a sale to set it on a new course for the future under new ownership.”
Gelert was established in 1975 and operates as an importer, wholesaler and retailer of outdoor and camping equipment with outlets in Porthmadog, Bedgellert, Caemarfon, Betws-y-coed and Dublin, and a showroom in Haydock.
