New partner takes stake in Sunderland law firm

An expanding Wearside law firm has a new ownership team in place after a new partner Surbhi Vedhara bought out the co-founder’s stake.

Surbhi Vedhara has taken on Peter Sweeney’s holding in Sunderland-based Sweeney Miller, which Peter set up with senior partner Paul Miller in 2002. The firm, which has moved to LLP status, retains the same name.

Peter, who has taken early retirement, will continue to act as a consultant for the litigation and person injury department of the business.

Paul Miller said: “This represents a new chapter for Sweeney Miller as we begin our second decade in business. Surbhi has proved to be a highly valuable member of the team and her rapid rise is just reward for her sterling work with clients in the region and across the UK.

“As a firm we are definitely seeing life return to the property market through the conveyancing work we are handling, and our commercial business work generally is increasing which bodes well for the immediate future.”

The growing commercial and commercial property wing of the firm will now be Surbhi’s responsibility. She has been with Sweeney Miller since 2008, following a stint with a Tyneside law firm after graduating from Newcastle University.

Surbhi, who came to the North East to study law from her home city of Mumbai in India, is fluent in Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi and Urdu.

She said: “The North East is a vibrant place and working in Sunderland I can see the vast potential of the city. We consider ourselves to be a progressive commercial law firm and also believe we can attract more business from across the North East. That’s my challenge and one I relish.

“I am very proud to take up a partnership within Sweeney Miller which I believe has a great future not just in Sunderland but in handling work across the region and beyond.”
