Northumberland Micro Scooter business goes worldwide

An expanding Northumberland scooter business is targeting a sharp rise in sales of safety equipment and accessories by launching them worldwide.

Micro Scooters, based in Hexham, is supplying protective clothing for children using its scooters, plus equipment to personalise them. The company is ow about to starting exporting the accessories.

The business, started by husband and wife team Ben and Anna Gibson in Hexham in 2006 when they discovered it was easier to get from A to B with their children on scooters rather than buggies, now employs 20 people.

Ben said: “We expect another strong rise in sales of scooters this year and we also think sales of our safety jackets, helmets, elbow and knee pads will rise quite sharply.

“With scooting becoming increasingly popular, safety is always at the top of the agenda and we’re doing all we can to help parents and teachers promote safe scooting.

“More and more children are keen to personalise their scooter and their ride, so we have high hopes for the sales of rucksacks, water bottles, zooters and all our other colourful and fun products we sell.

“Our scooter accessories will soon be available worldwide which is really exciting.”

Micro Scooters works with Gateshead-based Spark eCommerce Group to distribute its scooters and associated equipment.

As part of the link-up, free and discounted scooters are provided to Spark staff so they can provide better information and feedback to cutomers.

Spark deputy operations manager Phil Robertson sometimes uses his to scoot to work rather than drive.

He said: “The staff absolutely love the products and think they’re great fun. We’ve also found that they’re a benefit to the operation too - they’re especially good for cutting down on travelling time between units, and even around the fulfilment centre when there are no fork-lift trucks in operation.”

Ben said: “Our products aren’t just great for kids – we’re always keen to encourage people to leave their cars a home and ‘scoot the commute’ and the team at Spark are really behind that.”
