Behind the business with The London Eye Hospital

Bobby Qureshi is medical director of the London Eye Hosptial, the lead company of a group that includes the London Eye Hospital Pharma, and the London Eye Hospital Laser Eye Surgery. He takes Bdaily behind the business.

What key challenges has your company recently faced?

We constantly challenge ourselves to be the first to market with the latest technological innovations in eye care. We operate at the top of a very competitive market, other players within this market, with perhaps deeper pockets, chasing the mass market with non-specific solutions for patients; we are different because we pioneer bespoke treatments for patients and this requires our constant attention.

What is your biggest achievement over the past 12 months?

We have managed to more than double the size of our core business and also launched our own range of health supplements. This new range is our first step in a significant program of in-house developments which will include the launch of our own Intraocular Lenses (IOL) this year.

What is your most important focus for the coming year, and what do you hope to achieve?

We have a number of exciting developments with respect to new products and services, we will be releasing our own affordable IOL for macular degeneration, a unique novel laser treatment for macular degeneration and a new unique laser treatment for Floaters.

What excites you most about your industry and business?

We feel there are great and increasing opportunities to serve a large community of people who want the best in private healthcare. Although there are some very large players in this market we feel being flexible and innovative allows us to stay ahead and lead the way in the market.

What do you wish you’d known when starting out?

Personally I spent too long in the NHS before moving into the private sector. Running my own business frees me from much of the bureaucracy of large clinical teams, allowing me to innovate and push the boundaries of what we can do for our patients.

What will be the “next big thing“ in your industry, and how do you plan to handle it?

We are currently looking at a number of new technologies in the field of medical devices and also pharmaceuticals but of course these are competitively sensitive. We are fortunate to be working with very eminent scientist in the field to develop our own innovations to push forward the field of ophthalmology.
