Engineering manufacturer looking to add six new apprentices

North Shields-based manufacturer Elfab is looking to take on six new apprentices, starting in August 2013. Elfab topped the Ernst & Young Manufacturers’ League for apprenticeships in the North-East in both 2012 and 2013, and in the last two years has trebled the number of apprentices on its books.

The majority of the roles available are within manufacturing, but the company is also seeking to bolster its administration department. Elfab has produced a short video to explain its apprenticeship scheme in more detail.

Apprenticeships will run for one year, with the opportunity for further academic study on completion. Candidates would normally be around 18-years-old and have completed their first year at college, with Elfab then becoming their supporting company for their time in industry. Depending on the discipline concerned, apprentices would take on a number or roles, gain experience with different functions and take part in various short-term projects.

One former apprentice from last year’s programme is now studying full-time for a Mechanical Engineering degree at Newcastle University, sponsored by Elfab. Another has been given the opportunity of becoming a Maintenance Technician, a multi-skilled role demanding both mechanical engineering and electrical expertise. This position includes day release to allow the employee to study for an HNC, and will hopefully lead to a degree.

Elfab produces rupture discs, explosion vents and associated detection devices to protect people, plant, processes and the environment around the world. Although Elfab’s customers are predominantly found in the chemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and food processing industries, the company’s technology is also used in a wide range of OEM applications, from launch systems in space rockets, and air bags in cars, to cryogenic systems in body scanners.

Applicants for Elfab’s apprenticeship scheme should send a CV and covering email to apprenticeship@elfab.com.
