Port of Tyne setting sail for sound waves

McFly are laying anchor in the North East, for a special performance supported by one of the UK’s largest sea ports.

The Port of Tyne is sponsoring Sound Waves 2013, where the chart-topping boyband and Little Mix are headlining on Sunday, August 25.

The special open air concert, at Bents Park, South Shields, is being organised by South Tyneside Council and will also feature performances by X Factor winner Joe McElderry, Britain’s Got Talent finalists Luminites and indie pop band The Vamps.

Port of Tyne, which is recognised as a vital gateway between the North East and Europe, has agreed to sponsor the event as part of its on-going commitment to supporting arts, business and communities within the Port’s operating area.

Susan Wear, Port of Tyne Director of Corporate Affairs, said: “The Port of Tyne is delighted to support the Sound Waves concert. We hope that this event helps boost the local community by bringing lots more people to South Tyneside to enjoy a special day of live entertainment and hopefully support local businesses at the same time.

“We are especially happy that two great acts we helped with our support for the Pride of South Tyneside are coming back home.”

Sound Waves 2013, which is also being supported by Colmans and Dicksons, forms part of a wider programme of live music and family-friendly events which are running in South Tyneside throughout the summer.

Other highlights include the annual South Tyneside Summer Festival, which offers free entertainment from June until the end of August, including live performances in Bents Park by Liberty X (July 14), Toploader and the South (July 21) and Rick Astley (June 28).

Cllr Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “With appearances by McFly, Little Mix, Joe McElderry, Luminites and The Vamps, Sound Waves 2013 looks set to be one of the biggest events of the summer and we’re thrilled that Port of Tyne has come on board.”
