Breast implant scandal lifts British medical device sales

Dodgy breast implants fitted in 300,000 women worldwide have caused a surge in demand for cosmetic surgery devices made in the UK.

A healthcare scandal that erupted last year exposed defective implants made by a French company, which had been fitted in hundreds of thousands of women who underwent breast enhancement surgery.

Following what has been called one of the biggest trials in French legal history, UK breast implant manufacturers have seen a rise in demand for their product, with Glasgow-based company Nagor experiencing a 30% increase in sales.

The business is soon to announce their entrance into the Spanish and Mexican markets, with British-made implants already being exported to nearly 50 countries.

Ex-Pfizer executive Ayse Kocak, who is chief executive of Nagor, commented: “At this seminal time in our sector, we have a tremendous opportunity to fundamentally change the playing field of the breast implant industry.

“All businesses have an obvious need to be aligned with what their consumers want, and in our case it’s specifically about what women around the world want, and indeed, deserve.”

Nagor is owned by medical firm GC Aesthetics, who laid out plans to become the leading independent medical aesthetics company in the world by 2015, while they also own French brand, Eurosilicone.

Ms Kocak added: “We want to make sure that women are fully informed, and therefore empowered, in making their decision.

“We understand that it’s not just the physical aspect of breast enhancement or reconstruction, but how women feel about their choice to have breast implants placed inside their bodies.”

Global brand director at GC Aesthetics, Faye Mingo, said that as a company, they hope to get “under the skin” of issues concerning women when they turn to cosmetic breast surgery.

She commented: “We want to encourage [women] to do thorough research and offer a platform to share their experiences with each other.

“The public has certainly become more aware that choosing the implant is as important as choosing the surgeon.”
