George Clarke joins North East charity

TV presenter and architect George Clarke is now helping build a better future for children across the North East.

The famous face, who is best known for fronting Channel 4 show, The Restoration Man, has signed up as a trustee of regional charity The Foundation of Light.

The charity, part of Sunderland Association Football Club, helps more than 42,000 young people and their families every year via a wide range of education, sports, health and community engagement programmes running across the North East.

George, who was born and raised in Sunderland, had been working with the Foundation of Light as an ambassador since attending the charity’s 10th Birthday Carols of Light celebration event at Durham Cathedral in December 2011 – and is delighted to take on this new role.

He said: “Being from the North East I am keen to be involved in the regeneration of the region in any way I can. The Foundation of Light is doing some fantastic work across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham and it’s a real privilege to be able to accept this official role with them.”

George, who studied architecture at the University of Newcastle, has an admired reputation for innovative design and clear, inventive architectural concepts.

He is Creative Director of London-based architectural practice George Clarke + Partners, which is renowned for designing and building high quality, award winning projects throughout the UK and abroad, but is perhaps best known for his work as a writer, lecturer and TV presenter, fronting shows such as Build A New Life in the Country, The Home Show, and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces.

Sir Bob Murray CBE, Chair of Trustees at the Foundation of Light, personally invited George to join the board after Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE, a founding trustee of the charity, stepped down from the role earlier this year.

He said: “George has a real grasp of the importance of community and, like the Foundation of Light, is passionate about regeneration and helping to transform people’s lives.

“I am certain his creative perspective and vast experience in architecture will further strengthen our board, while his public profile will also be a huge asset and help us to convey the importance of the Foundation’s work to the public and other stakeholders.”

Mr Clarke now joins the Foundation of Light’s existing trustees Sir Bob Murray CBE (Chair), Kate Adie OBE, Paul Collingwood MBE, Steve Cram MBE, Baroness Estelle Morris of Yardley, the Hon James Ramsbotham DL, Sir Tim Rice, Ellis Short and Sir Peter Vardy DL. The charity’s Royal Patron is Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex GCVO.

George said: “I’m delighted to join the Foundation of Light as a trustee and want to publically express my thanks to Sir Bob for asking me.”
