Business gets crafty thanks to facelift
A crafty businesswoman says she has plans to employ staff thanks to moving into new premises.
Six empty retail units in a Middlesbrough town centre street have been snapped up thanks to an initiative by the local council to encourage business growth.
Now Josie McCabe, owner of The Craftery, says she plans to use it as a springboard to build her business and take on staff.
“I started the business three years ago but this is just the sort of boost I need to take things further,” she said.
“I’d love to be able to take on staff and now I have these new premises that’s what I’m hoping to do.”
Six of the seven Middlesbrough Council-owned premises on Gilkes Street, recently targeted as part of an initiative approved by the Council’s Executive, have now been let.
The row of units is now the home to three independent retailers specialising in crafts, printing and embroidery services and holistic therapies.
Josie added: “This location is fantastic as it’s right in the centre of town, yet it’s affordable enough to allow me to develop and grow my business.”
Other units in Broadcasting House and on Corporation Road have also been let to businesses including a community interest company and a takeaway food outlet.
Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “These are tough times for businesses everywhere, and Middlesbrough Council recognises this.
“Empty shops not only have an effect on the landlord but also on neighbouring businesses.
“We will continue to do all we can to ensure Middlesbrough is a great place for businesses to find their feet and develop as part of a thriving local economy.”
