Newcastle Restaurant takes Asian cuisine to the Ashes

A renowned South East Asian restaurant is preparing to bowl over cricket fans next month at one of this year’s biggest international sporting events.

Electric East, based in St James’ Boulevard, Newcastle, will showcase its popular Asian cuisine at Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground on August 9-13 for the fourth Investec Ashes Test.

This is the first time that an Ashes Test match will be played in the North East, and the Electric East Catering Corp will be stationed at the ground to serve fast, fresh, healthy street food to cricket enthusiasts as they watch England take on Australia.

The team from Electric East, which features in the Michelin Guide 2013, will cook up many of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, including the classic Indonesian Beef Rendang curry.

Manager Mark Lagun said: “Our mobile Catering Corp brings a lively, quirky approach to outdoor catering, and it has been a huge hit at events and food festivals around the region since we launched it earlier this year.

“We’re delighted to come to Durham to be involved in such a prestigious international event, especially as this will be the first time that the area has hosted the Ashes. We’re really looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere and introducing our fabulous Asian flavours to cricket fans from around the world.”
