Greater Manchester electric vehicle scheme goes live
The Greater Manchester Electric Vehicle scheme, a new electric vehicle charging-point network and pay as you go programme led by Transport for Greater Manchester, is now underway.
More than 250 charging bays across the ten Greater Manchester districts are now available to provide commuters with the means to charge their electric vehicles. The scheme is operated by Charge Your Car (CYC), a leading name in electric vehicle charging networks. CYC will manage the paymemts and access to the GMEV scheme on behalf of TfGM.
Private Sector partners, including NCP, Manchester Central, Manchester Metropolitan University and Salford University are also involved, providing more charging bays to supplement the network.
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM committee, said: “Safe and dependable transport is essential to the region and to the economy, but we are also working with our partners to provide more sustainable low-carbon travel choices, be it bus, rail, tram, bike or car.”
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Electric vehicles, from family cars and scooters to fleet vehicles, are going to transform the way we live and work, as well as improving air quality, reducing noise pollution and creating a better environment for residents and visitors to our region.”
A consortium from Greater Manchester, led by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, secured £1.7m of support through the ‘Plugged In Places’ scheme, funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles. The GMEV scheme has also received a further £1m from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Customers wishing to use the charging bays can register through the TfGM website and receive an access card in the post, register via mobile app from the website or pay by phone. Locations now open include Hulme Street, NCP Church Street, Ardwick Sports Hall, Heaton Park and Greenpark Road in Northenden.
