Sheffield's ITM Power enter innovative Mediterranean energy project
Sheffield-based energy storage and clean fuel outfit, ITM Power, have joined a European scheme to convert surplus renewable electricity into gas.
The Mediterranean Power-to-Gas platform (MP2G) was established earlier this year and comprises a eleven European companies who have joined together to develop the ‘power-to-gas’ concept where gas can be stored efficiently in the natural grid.
ITM will be involved in the project that develops integration of wind and solar PV for power-to-gas energy storage across the Mediterranean.
The platform is managed by Dutch energy firm, DNV KEMA and complements the similar North Sea Power-to-Gas platform.
Other energy companies involved in the project include France’s GDF Suez, Portugal’s EDP and Italy’s Edison.
ITM Power CEO, Graham Cooley, commented: “Power-to-Gas energy storage is the lowest cost long term energy storage technique and is being deployed all over Europe and we are delighted to be part of this new initiative.”
ITM are specialists in engineering hydrogen solutions, and have been involved in a number of overseas partnerships.
