Manchester school keeps top global structural engineering company

Manchester’s Chetham’s School of Music has been included on a prestigious global list of structural engineering projects.

The building, which was designed by architects at the city’s own Stephenson:ISA Studio, has been nominated for the Institution of Structural Engineers’ 2013 Awards.

Judges commented how the building was situated on a “challenging” site, bounded by Network Rail and adjacent to the existing campus which includes examples of medieval buildings.

The School contains concert and recital halls, as well as teaching spaces.

Commenting on the nomination, the judging panel said: “The judges recognise the creative, intelligent and deft design undertaken to maximise the potential of this site to the client within their tight budgetary constraints – from the development of complex temporary works and basements to delicate bridge and feature structures.”
