Exciting new apprenticeships announced at Port of Tyne

Five new opportunities for young people hoping to kick start a career in administration, accountancy or civil engineering are available now at the Port of Tyne.

The port, the North East Business of the Year, will more than treble the number of apprenticeships this year and is now recruiting for apprentices across its business.

“Our apprentices see the chance to learn on the job and get qualifications at the same time as a real alternative to full time studies,” said Geoff Gillon, Director of Human Resources.

“For many years we have had engineering apprentices who have succeeded and gone on to jobs and careers around the world.

“We have extended the apprenticeship programme to many other areas. Our first Business Administration apprentice recently left to take another step on her career in HR, so following that success we’re now delighted to offer more Business Administration apprenticeships in Facilities, HR and Engineering, as well as two new apprenticeships in Civil Engineering and Accountancy.

“The Port is a very successful business offering excellent opportunities, we are looking for people who want to contribute to and be part of that success.”

Apprentices can expect to learn the ropes while working towards recognised vocational qualifications whilst gaining valuable on-the-job training.

Recently named by the Department of Transport as the UK’s fastest growing major port, there are £180m plans for major expansion, creating 300 new jobs and the development of the apprenticeship programme is one of the ways the Port is preparing for this new phase in its history.

Amy Adams joined the Port earlier this year as a Business Administration apprentice. She said: “I have been able to be very hands on and gain a lot of real work experience.

“I would tell anyone thinking of applying to just to go for it - it’s a really good opportunity to work for one of the region’s leading businesses and it has really given me a great head start in a new career.”

The Port is working with recruitment agency Zenith People to find its stars of the future and will hold local workshops and training sessions designed to help hone the candidates’ skills even before the interview process begins.
