Sheffield sweet maker gives pupils a ‘Taste of Work’

Mondeléz International of Sheffield has been shortlisted for a national IGD Award, for its achievement in staff development and employability skills.

Over the past 12 months, the company, which produces Maynards, Bassetts and Trebor sweets, has delivered a Taste of Work programme that develops employability skills in youngsters in primary, secondary and further education, providing them with experience of industries including engineering, manufacturing, leisure and tourism. More than 250 students have benefited from the drive - with one taken on as a full time apprentice and shortlisted for the Employability Award.

IGD is a research charity for the food and grocery industry and its awards recognise successes in all areas, including manufacturing, logistics, retail, human resources and small businesses.

The shortlist and winners are selected by some of the industry’s top players, including representatives of Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Marks and Spencer. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 8th October, which will be hosted by television and radio presenter Gabby Logan.

Sonia Chhatwal, Mondeléz International community affairs manager, said: “Taste of Work is an extremely important initiative as it gives young people the skills they need to develop careers in specific industries from an early age. We’re thrilled that it is gaining recognition and extremely pleased to have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award.”

Taste of Work is a work-related learning curriculum-led initiative working in schools and further education colleges. The most recent addition to the programme is the primary element, which provides children with the opportunity to see STEM subjects come to life through an enterprise focused presentation delivered by a Mondelēz International volunteer.
