MP ‘shadows’ Coast & Country apprentices

Redcar MP Ian Swales has experienced at first-hand Coast & Country’s commitment to training a skilled workforce for the future.

The regeneration and housing company, which owns and manages more than 10,000 houses, has 20 apprentices on its books including the traditional trades such as joinery and bricklaying as well as administration, environmental maintenance and other roles.

Mr Swales spent a morning ‘shadowing’ a range of Coast & Country apprentices including a visit to its Westfield Farm community resource centre, where he saw some of the apprentices undertaking practical training.

Ian Swales said: “Coast & Country should be commended for its commitment to apprenticeships. ““It was great to have the opportunity to experience at first-hand what Coast & Country’s apprentices are doing and to talk to them about their hopes and aspirations for the future.

“The Government is backing apprenticeships as a great way to start a career as apprentices learn through practical work, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.”

Coast & Country Chief Executive Iain Sim said: “Apprenticeships are an excellent way of equipping future generations of employees with technical and key employability skills and nurturing their aptitude for work.

“At Coast & Country, we are passionate about helping young people to take that vital first step on the career ladder and to develop their full potential and life skills to enable them to progress both in the world of work and in their personal life.

“It was a real confidence booster for our apprentices to see one of our local MPs taking such a close and enthusiastic interest in their training.” The apprentices undertake a certain period of training depending on the trade they are entering and attend day or block release courses at a local college.
