Technology drive aims to boost Durham business

A new app has been launched to keep people up to date with the latest developments in Durham City.

Launching this weekend, the Durham City app represents over 400 business in Durham, and aims to attract more people to visit the city centre and boosting the local economy.

Developed by Durham Business Improvement District (BID), the app will attempt to remind people of the benefits and intrigues a day out in Durham can offer and encourage them to shop in the city centre.

Sonali Craddock, manager, Durham BID: “The decline of the high street has been the focus of much attention recently, however we are embracing technology to help develop our city centre, reminding people of just what a great place Durham City is and encouraging them to shop in the city centre once again”.

The new website and app have been designed to appeal to both businesses and the public with an A-Z of Durham BID area businesses with information such as opening times, the ability to search by a specific category, maps with GPS, public transport and car park information plus details of upcoming events.

An offers section with printable or on-screen vouchers will enable customers to make the most of what Durham retailers have to offer.

Sonali added: “Durham is a vibrant and cultural place that attracts many people. We know that many people are already using their smartphones to enhance their visits to the city centre. So having a Durham app and website, with relevant and up to date information and offers, can only help Durham business and their customers.

“We have used the latest technology to ensure the app delivers for both businesses and the public. People can find what they want, locate it, use appropriate offers and rate their experience - all at the touch of a button.”

This new initiative is widely supported by retailers in Durham City. Michelle Sheen, director of Warm Sanctuary said: “As the owner of a flooring & interiors store located in one of the less obvious shopping streets in the City, I anticipate the app & website will showcase the stores products & services to a whole new audience of consumers. Without this interactive opportunity many potential customers would be unaware that our company is just on their doorstep.”

There will be over 50 different offers available for Durham shoppers including fashion, food, coffee and beauty treatments, and this figure are set to rise substantially once the website and app are live.

To download the app, visit the App Store and search for the ‘Durham City’ App. It is available to Android, Apple and Blackberry devices, and is free. Windows phone will follow in September.
