Engineering services firm flying high with Heathrow deal

A County Durham engineering services company is flying high after landing a quarter of a million pound contract with Heathrow Airport in London.

IES – Inspection and Engineering Services – of Evans Business Centre on Aycliffe Business Park, is working on the new Terminal 2a and 2b and the Terminal 3 integrated baggage centre.

Director Trevor Forsyth said the contract is worth “close to £250,000”.

“It is an amazing project, with which we have been delighted to have been involved,” he said.

“The Terminals are fantastic, with underground tunnels running for miles and miles, big enough to drive a truck through.”

The company, which was formed three years ago, has been responsible for the all the non-destructive weld testing at the terminals, working with Watson Steel of Lancashire, which is a crucial part of the building and development process.

Trevor and his fellow Director, David Burke, have worked in the field of inspections and engineering services for a total of more than 35 years on projects such as wind farm and other projects all over the world, including Singapore, Australia, Ireland and Germany, as well as most parts of the UK.

They have worked with big names, such as Siemens UK and Siemens Germany, Severfield Watsons Ltd and will shortly start work with Harland and Wolff in Belfast.

Trevor and David first met when working on another Heathrow project – Terminal 5 – but did not get together to form the company until some years later.

The company is expanding, with a growing number of consultants in the field and a recent move to bigger office premises.

It has also joined the South Durham Engineering and Manufacturing Forum and will be a first time exhibitor at the Oktoberfest Engineering and Manufacturing Exhibition 2013 at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe on October 17.

Trevor said: “I think it will be a great opportunity to get to know fellow companies in this field and show them what we can offer.”

The day long networking and marketing opportunity is billed as the region’s premier Engineering and Manufacturing event and is organised by the Engineering Forums in County Durham and other regional stakeholders. It brings together sellers and buyers from across the region and beyond.
