Leeds bar group toasts another new venture

Leeds-based bar group North Bar will open another new outlet today creating new jobs and taking its venue portfolio to six across the city region.

The new venture- Preston- opens in Oakwood, creating six new jobs, and follows the success of their other new venture, North Bar Social, which opened in Otley in June and was the company’s first move out of Leeds city centre and was also their first freehold.

The group as a whole employs around 40 staff.

Preston takes its name from a former shopkeeper at the site. T.I.Preston traded as a chemist and a mosaic doorstep bearing his name still greets visitors.

Both Preston and North Bar Social are small, neighbourhood venues taking the operational blueprint from the group’s existing two suburban sites Further North and Alfred.

Since opening in 1997, North Bar has become a leading name in the UK beer scene. The parent company prides itself on its customer service and wide range of more unusual drinks including a range of bespoke offerings created in collaboration with some of the industry’s best known brands such as ale brewed in collaboration with Kirkstall Brewery in Leeds, pilsner brewed with Lindeboom in Holland and coffee roasted in partnership with Bolling/Grumpy Mule and Laynes Espresso.

John Gyngell, director of North Bar, said: “We’ve had a fantastic year with the success of the other North Bar sites and our recent opening in Otley. As always we aim to immerse ourselves in our locations as this reflects our broader, long range interest in being an active stakeholder in all the communities we operate in.”

Christian Townsley, director of North Bar Ltd, added: “Oakwood is a beautiful suburb in Leeds in a remarkable location with the vast, leafy Roundhay Park on the doorstep and a rich historical heritage. We’re delighted to be bringing the local residents a North Bar venue offering the usual excellent service and wonderful drinks our customers expect.”
