Lock up your caravans

A Teesside storage firm is urging caravan owners get street wise and lock up their vehicles for the winter.

Although the number of caravan thefts has reduced in recent years, only a small proportion are ever recovered by the police with many stolen to order.

The vast majority of those are taken from driveways and outside owner’s homes.

And at a time when caravaners are starting to think about putting their vehicles away for the winter, owners are being urged to step up security and not become a statistic.

Michael Heaton, of Billingham-storage company Box Clever, said: “Owners need to be aware of the dangers of storing a caravan on their drive and look at a more secure option.

“Caravanning is really popular these days but unfortunately the thieves know that too with a lot stolen to order - three-quarters of which are never recovered.”

Nearly half a million people in the UK own a caravan and for many, storing the caravan securely when it’s not in use, can present a problem.

Choosing a storage site which is approved with gold certification by The Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association (CaSSOA) is a good option, particularly one with CCTV and 24-hour security meaning owners can come and go at any time of the day or night. CASSOA certification also offers the benefit of discounted insurance for those wanting extra peace of mind.

Michael added: “We’re coming up to the busy period for caravan storage when owners start to think about security. We can’t stress enough the importance of keeping your vehicle safe.

“The 24 hour access makes it very convenient for our customers and gives great peace of mind.”
