Football club’s events arm marks first year

An events company which is a subsidiary of a North East Premier League football club is celebrating a landmark first year in business.

1879 Events Management, part of Sunderland AFC, was launched in summer 2012 to offer a one-stop solution for event organisers across the region.

It has since catered for more than 50,000 people at a wide range of events.

The company has provided catering and event management services for a diverse range of events and functions around the region, including business awards dinners, concerts and private parties, which have been attended by more than 50,000 people overall.

This includes the North East’s largest LGBT festival, Newcastle Pride, the North East Business Awards at Teesside University and the 2012 Sunderland Retail Awards in the city’s Bridges Shopping Centre.

SAFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson said: “1879 Events Management has been able to utilise SAFC’s experience of hosting events at the Stadium of Light, to offer a comprehensive events management service for the whole of the North East and beyond.

“In the past 12 months the firm has proven it can cater for a wide range of events, from fine-dining to festivals, and we look forward to continuing this expansion in the coming months and years.”

The company, which also manages events at the Stadium of Light, was recently awarded its first local authority contract, to act as a ticketing agent and catering supplier for a major concert organised by South Tyneside Council in August this year.

Sound Waves, the concert being held at Bent’s Park South Shields, will feature several big names of pop including McFly, Little Mix, Joe McElderry, Luminites and The Vamps. It has also been appointed to provide bespoke catering for all corporate and private events at the re-launched National Glass Centre, Sunderland as well as managing its new Brasserie.
