Doncaster decorating contractor brushes up well

Magill Painting of Doncaster has been announced Supreme Winner at ‘industry Oscars,’ the prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Competition, which celebrated its 30th anniversary at an awards ceremony attended by over 200 guests at the London Film Museum.

With a record number of entries received, representatives from the Johnstone’s technical team travelled the length and breadth of the country to handpick this year’s 17 finalists, across four categories – Residential, Commercial and Industrial, Period and Restoration and Health and Education.

They looked at the quality of decorative finish, intricacy of the work and the technical and logistical challenges presented by the projects.

Magill claimed the highest accolade, Painter of the Year, for a number of key projects; its recently completed work decorating the interior of Doncaster Council’s 57,500 sq ft Civic Office building, including walls, ceilings and skirting boards; the new £10m Campsmount Technology College in Norton; and the year-long refurbishment of Sirius & Ganton Academy in Hull.

Here, the sheer scale and quality of the work carried out by the 20-strong team, which included two specialists painstakingly hand-painting a striped blue, green and yellow finish in the school’s atrium, particularly impressed the audience and judges on the night.

As well as the status that comes from winning the celebrated award in front of the crème de la crème of the UK’s painting and decorating industry, the Magill team also took away a fully branded new van to ensure that the business will never be missed in Doncaster and surrounding areas.

Director, Simon Magill, said: “We were absolutely thrilled just to have made it to the final of these awards and to then be named the Supreme Winner was just incredible. We faced strong competition from the other entrants and to have our work on the Sirius & Ganton Academy in Hull recognised at such a prestigious event is a real honour and more than makes up for all the hours spent working on it!”

Steve Pocock, general manager, PPG Architectural Coatings UK & Ireland commented: “It was fantastic to see such high quality craftsmanship and professionalism once again from all the finalists in this year’s competition.

“Johnstone’s is delighted to have been able to celebrate the quality of British decorating and to recognise the very best in the business through our Painter of the Year event over the last 30 years. The judges are impressed every year by the quality of work.”
