One-stop-shop service launched to provide all round home-based care

Social housing provider Coast & Country is expanding its support for older and disabled residents with the launch of a ‘one-stop-shop’ to help people live independently in their own homes.

Coast & Country’s HomeCall division already provides Telecare support, where an alarm alerts a 24-hour contact centre if there were signs of potential problems or emergencies.

Now HomeCall is being extended to allow vulnerable people to tap in to other Coast & Country expert services with access through one contact point.

The expanded provision is called HomeCall Independent Living and offers

• Assistive Technology services – a range of alarms and sensors

• Handyman and Property services – from odd jobs to more complex tasks

• Personal Care – including dressing, bathing and help getting in and out of bed

• Practical support – including housework and preparing meals

• Social support - companionship or help getting out and about

Iain Sim, Chief Executive of Coast & Country, one of the largest regeneration and housing companies in the North East, said: “We have always been passionate about the communities we serve and HomeCall Independent Living is all about serving the wider population.

“With people living longer, it is vital to have alternative and imaginative ways of supporting them to sustain a quality of life and maintain independence.

“This joined-up, integrated offer means that people, unable to look after the fabric of their homes, no longer have to worry about keeping their gardens maintained or getting those niggling property repairs carried out.

“We believe strongly that HomeCall Independent Living can play an important role in delivering on the challenges currently facing both health and social care.”

HomeCall Independent Living has been developed by Coast & Country in partnership with homecare provider Heritage Healthcare which has an established reputation for providing quality care.

Glenn PIckersgill, Heritage Healthcare Managing Director, said: “HomeCall Independent Living gives vulnerable people their independence while offering their relatives and friends the peace of mind that help is available when they need it.

“Many people prefer to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Good quality homecare plays a crucial part within healthcare, preventing people going into hospital unnecessarily or into a care home earlier than need be.”

HomeCall Independent Living is aimed at older people, adults and families of children with disabilities. Currently focused on the Redcar & Cleveland area the goal is to evolve the service across Teesside, the North East and North Yorkshire and beyond.

Further service expansion is planned including help with home moving and medicines management through the development of delivery partnerships with other organisations.

Mr Sim added: “We are proud and excited about the partnership we are developing with Heritage Healthcare. We both have a strong value base of quality and excellent services for local people. We already are working successfully together on our new Telecare contract in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland with Heritage bringing a lot of new skills and services to the HomeCall Independent Living offer.”

HomeCall’s Telecare service involves connecting a Lifeline alarm unit to a telephone socket in a client’s home, providing a direct link into a 24-hour customer contact centre.

A selection of ‘intelligent’ Telecare sensors also can be fitted around the home, in places identified in a formal assessment, to monitor health, safety and security.

If a Telecare sensor is activated, a message is automatically sent to HomeCall’s 24-hour contact centre, where a trained Customer Advisor will deal with the situation. A family member, carer, Independent Living Advisor, or the emergency services will be alerted as required.
