Enterprise Nation launches biggest ever Startup Saturday at the British Library

An online business network is set to launch the Biggest Ever StartUp Saturdayevent for would-be entrepreneurs during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Enterprise Nationhas teamed up with the British Library to host the mammoth start-up event on Saturday November 23, which it hopes will help hundreds of people to become their own boss.

The start-up day follows a StartUp Saturday UK tour to libraries in major cities including Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham where entrepreneurs have been busy starting-up across the UK.

Record numbers of people are starting businesses in the UK. Last year more than 484,000 new businesses were registered with 70% of those starting small at home.

The day will be hosted by best-selling author and small business expert Emma Jones who is the founder of Enterprise Nation and co-founder of national enterprise campaign StartUp Britain.

Emma said: “We are seeing a massive increase in the number of people starting businesses. These are not necessarily people with a background in business, these are people who have come up with a great idea, or who want to generate value from a hobby with a view to turning it into a business.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week represents a great opportunity to get these people started in the inspiring surroundings of the British Library, which has its own Business & IP Centre dedicated to helping entrepreneurs to start up and grow their business. All most people need to get going is to take that first positive step towards their goal – and this incredible StartUp Saturday event will provide an amazing start to their journey.”

The day will also feature three start-ups who have turned a hobby into a business after being inspired by a StartUp Saturday event. They are; dressmaker Tilly Walnes, who went on to feature in the Great British Sewing Bee and set up Tilly and the Buttons; BBC journalist and photographer Eddie Botsio who now puts on successful exhibitions of his own work; and food entrepreneur Philip Crilly, who literally gave himself three months to get started after attending a previous StartUp Saturday event at the British Library – and documented every step on the Enterprise Nation website.

Isabel Oswell, head of business development at the British Library’s Business & IP Centre : “Our research shows that getting the right advice and information makes a business four times more likely to succeed, with only one in 10 businesses which have used our Business & IP Centre failing after year three, compared to a national average of four in 10.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting StartUp Saturday at the Library during this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week, which promises to offer entrepreneurs the best and biggest package of information, inspiration and practical advice yet.”

In the space of a day attendees will discover all they need to know about starting a business; coming up with an idea, writing a business plan, making sales, creating a home on the web and keeping on top of the books – it will also offer friendly advice for businesses that are already started about how to it to the next level and grow.
