Morgan Sindall wins Liverpool school construction contract
Morgan Sindall has won a £15 million contract to construct the new St Hilda’s CE High School in Sefton Park, Liverpool.
The project for Liverpool City Council will see the construction and infrastructure company construct a new school on land which neighbours the existing school site on Croxteth Drive.
The new school will be considerably larger than the existing building with intake rising from 129 to 150 pupils across each year group. Once complete, the development will also allow the school to transition into a co-educational school.
Work is due to start early in 2014 to construct the new building which will feature state-of-the-art facilities and outdoor sports pitches. The scheme is being funded and supported by the Liverpool School Investment Programme, created by Mayor Joe Anderson.
He said: “I am delighted that another of the schemes funded by the Liverpool School Investment Programme is moving forward.
“Giving our children a fantastic education in first class surroundings is a major priority and this will make a huge difference to the learning experience of present and future generations of pupils.
“We will be setting ambitious targets for the construction to make sure as much of the work as possible goes to local firms, and we also give young people the opportunity to take up apprenticeships.”
Barry Roberts, area director for Morgan Sindall, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to this ambitious scheme to redevelop St Hilda’s CE High School. Increased pressure on local schools to provide high-quality education facilities for a growing population is a key issue in Merseyside and one we’re pleased to be playing a part in tackling.
“Morgan Sindall has great depth of experience in education construction and we’re well versed in delivering projects across the country on time and on budget. We’re looking forward to working with Liverpool City Council to deliver these education facilities for people in the local area.”
Morgan Sindall is working on a number of Liverpool-based projects and has recently won a £19 million contract with Maro Developments to construct the new Matalan headquarters at the Galaxy site in Knowsley Industrial Park, off Acornfield Road.
The company is also working on a £7 million project to expand Liverpool Science Park (LSP). The project team is currently constructing a new four-storey building named Innovation Centre 3 (ic3), which will provide 42,000 sq ft of additional office and laboratory space at the site.
The new Liverpool Schools Investment Programme is worth £169 million and was approved in November 2012. The programme, which will help to transform secondary education in the city, replaced the Building Schools for the Future programme.
