ASH Wireless Electronics’ design team shortlisted for Elektra Awards 2013
ASH Wireless Electronics, designers of the cycle safety system Cycle Alert, are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Design Team of the Year Award at this year’s Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards as part of the Cycle Alert design team.
The Elektra Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies in the European electronics industry. The finalists represent the product launches, employee initiatives and business achievements which most impressed a panel of independent judges from a cross section of electronics engineering companies and disciplines.
In London in 2012, 14 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents, a high percentage of which were through collisions with HGVs (source: The Times). This follows on the back of 2010 statistics where Heavy Goods Vehicles were involved in 43% of London’s cycling deaths. Cycle Alert is a safety system that alerts drivers of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) to a cyclist’s presence. The system has three parts: a sensor fitted to a bicycle, a sensor fitted to a vehicle and a dashboard receiver. The three components communicate notifying a driver visually and audibly when a cyclist is in close proximity. The system is based on a distributed RFID technique that gives all round coverage to a truck. Novel low-power techniques and design means 10 year life, battery powered side sensors can be used which allows an installation time of thirty minutes to HGVs.
Commenting on the awards, ASH Managing Director Steve Braithwaite said, “The design of, and partnership with, Cycle Alert is something we are very proud of. Not only does Cycle Alert showcase our wireless electronic design expertise but it is a system that will help save cyclist’s lives and, as keen cyclists, that is something close to our hearts. Designing Cycle Alert required a tight integration of real time software, low-power electronics and RF design and we are delighted to have had ASH’s contribution recognised in the development of a product such as Cycle Alert.”
A demonstration of the system in an interview with Cycle Alert co-founder Peter Le Masurier can be seen here.
The winners will be announced at the Elektra award ceremony, which takes place at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on 27th November 2013.
