Tax Man to Bat Man - HMRC clamps down on tax ‘baddies’

HMRC is currently running the second stage of a tax evasion publicity campaign through a promised series of gritty billboard advertisements and radio adverts.

Clearly HMRC is taking a hard-hitting approach to this new campaign, as having seen or heard these adverts you would be forgiven for thinking they were for the latest Quentin Tarantino film.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that HMRC’s latest campaign will see them crack down on the private security industry, focusing on bouncers and security guards in London and the South East. They estimate that this could potentially raise £10m.

HMRC has previously promised 30 new task forces a year and continue a policy of focusing resources on areas which the taxman feels are particularly high risk for non-tax compliance.

They estimate that these specialist task forces will generate additional taxes of £90m per year for the next three years. Further taskforces will target the construction industry in London, ‘hidden wealth in the Midlands’ and the ‘hidden economy’ in the second hand motor trade in the Midlands.

And to round off a burst of announcements, HMRC has also launched a new property disclosure initiative under which landlords not reporting rents are encouraged to come forward and settle up.

Looks like the summer holidays are officially over for the taxman then…
