Blaydon entrepreneur takes magic touch online

A young Blaydon-based entrepreneur is trying hand at a new venture - selling magic gloves from his loft.

29 year-old Sean Gerrie, a computing graduate, has invested his own money in setting up the operation from home and says previous failed ideas have spurred him on.

The former HMV and Virgin Megastore worker has been self employed for five years and says he has taken his retailing experience online in search of his first million.

Sean said: “I’ve found getting a good degree is great experience, but not a golden ticket – times are tougher and the hard work doesn’t always pay off in terms of money in your pocket, but the experience is invaluable.

“I’m always researching and trialing new online businesses, the benefit is the start-up costs of testing a little business online are relatively low, for me time is the best investment.”

With his latest venture, MagicGloves.co.uk, Sean is hoping to corner the market in one-size-fits-all gloves that allow wearers to operate touchscreen smartphones, as well as children’s mittens.

Sean, who has provided online marketing assistance for a range of top local and national companies including Hays Travel and DFS Sofas, added: “I’ve always wanted to be self-sufficient, and whilst working to help other businesses can be good, for me the real reward is being able to offer quality goods in a somewhat quirky way, utilising Twitter and the Facebook likes, to engage with customers and offer good all round value.

“Many people want to try setting up their own business, but have a fear of failing. I’ve failed a few times, but the issues go hand in hand with making better choices – it’s relatively easy to set-up online, and with the likes of ebay and Amazon Marketplace, you don’t have to be a geeky web developer like me.”
