Newcastle Science City appointed new director

One of the North East’s most successful business women has been appointed to lead the future development of Newcastle Science City.

Fiona Standfield will become the new Director of Newcastle Science City and will join the organisation, a partnership between Newcastle University and NewcastleCity Council, for a three year term.

Fiona brings with her over 20 years’ experience in high profile and board level roles across the public and private sectors, and is currently both Acting Chair of the Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of Northern Stage.

She will now take on the lead role in delivering Newcastle Science City’s ambitious aims to advance the cause of the city and the wider region as a driving force for science excellence and industry, including the successful delivery ofScience Central, the UK’s biggest development site, based in Newcastle citycentre.

Fiona said: “I am delighted to be taking up this role as Newcastle Science Cityembarks upon an exciting new chapter in its development. I feel privileged to have this opportunity to lead the team, build on the success achieved to date and support the innovative partnership between the University and the Council, which is working to enable Newcastle to deliver its full potential as a city of science.”

Fiona will play an integral part in attracting private sector occupants to theScience Central site which is expected to open its first building, The Core,Science Central, in Autumn 2014.

Newcastle University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Brink said: “Fiona’s considerable experience and leadership in various different organisations will be invaluable in driving forward the vision for Newcastle Science City, and in particular Science Central. This is an exciting time for the project, and we are delighted that Fiona has accepted the post.”

Leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Forbes added: “Fiona brings with her a wealth of knowledge which coupled with her energy and enthusiasm, will be integral to the continued development of Newcastle Science City.

“She combines a strong business background with a passion for science, and an understanding about how this could transform Newcastle’s future.”

Fiona is expected to join Newcastle Science City in early November.
