Set-back for Peel over Salford housing plans
North West property giant Peel is considering its options after plans to build a housing estate in Salford were rejected.
Peel applied for outline planning permission to build up to 100 properties on land off Vicars Hall Lane and Highclove Lane in Boothstown.
The plans were rejected by Salford council’s planning and transportation regulatory panel at a meeting at Swinton Town Hall.
It declined approval for the proposals after hearing objections from protest group Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID).
The panel raised concerns about access and public transport.
Should Peel decide to appeal against the decision, the company is likely to face further opposition – as it does over a larger scheme, the Broadoak development, for up to 600 homes off Worsley Road and a new marina on the Bridgewater Canal.
This proposal has yet to be put to the council.
Coun Karen Garrido, Salford’s Conservative leader and chairman of RAID, said: “It was vital to protect our green fields and should Peel decide to submit an appeal against this decision, we will be continuing our efforts to make sure it is again defeated.”
Peel says it believes the proposed schemes would provide “much-needed new family homes”.
