Northumbrian Water chief executive gets ICE honour

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has honoured one of the North East’s leading business figures with the highest level of membership within the organisation.

Heidi Mottram, OBE, Chief Executive Officer of Northumbrian Water, has been made a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Engineers can either apply for Fellowship, or can be invited by the President of the Institution, which was the case for Heidi Mottram, who was nominated for consideration by ICE North East.

Having begun her career with British Rail in the mid-1980s, Heidi Mottram held a number of roles within GNER and was commercial director of Arriva Trains Northern before becoming Managing Director of Northern Rail Ltd. In 2010, she was appointed as CEO of Northumbrian Water Group.

The grade of Fellow is the highest and most senior grade of ICE membership and is reserved for senior civil engineers who have made a significant contribution to the profession or have advanced the practice of engineering. Fellowship of the ICE allows the recipient to: contribute to national debates and shape policy, share expertise and knowledge, use the designatory letters FICE, use the exclusive ICE Fellows’ stamp, and, if a chartered engineer, apply for membership of The Worshipful Company of Engineers.

Penny Marshall, interim director of ICE North East said: “Heidi is a strong leader at the heart of one of the most important infrastructure businesses in the North of England, so we were very pleased to nominate her for Fellowship. The region, and civil engineering, needs people like Heidi and we hope her Fellowship membership leads to an even greater integration of her skills and drive within the wider industry.”

Heidi Mottram said: “The key role of the members of the Institution of Civil Engineers is to deliver the nation’s essential infrastructure and ensure that it is fit for the future. “I am now privileged to be given the opportunity to help shape that future from within the Institute and I’m enthusiastically looking forward to meeting the challenges that brings.”
