Science site and Marina get green awards

A science site and marina have been highlighted as “outstanding projects” in The County Durham Environment Awards 2013

Durham gateway at Durham University’s science site and Seaham Harbour Marina got the top accolades of Outstanding Award at a ceremony in Durham City this week.

Other successful entries include a restored castle and a gym powered by energy from its fitness equipment.

The awards, now in their 24th year, are organised by the County Durham Environment Partnership to recognise great design and environmental achievement as well as contribution to the community.

This year some 55 entries were received for businesses, community groups, schools, colleges and public and private organisations in County Durham.

Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at the Banks Group, who is a member of the judging panel, said: “We are delighted to be able to recognise the excellence of so many inspirational projects that are making such a positive impact on the environment of County Durham and particularly pleased that we have been able to award two projects as being outstanding this year.

“Durham University’s science site has incorporated sustainable principles throughout its design and development and these principles are now a benchmark for future developments within the university.

“The development of Seaham Harbour Marina has integrated modern sustainable facilities into the existing historic features of the harbour to create a new commercial and leisure environment.”

Scargill Castle in Teesdale, built in 1550 on the site of an earlier medieval castle, has been totally restored and converted into luxury holiday accommodation.

The community-run Renewable Spectrum Gym in Willington is claimed to be the first “green gym” in the country. Energy is provided by dynamos fitted to exercise bikes and cross trainers

Terry Collins, chair of County Durham Environment Partnership, said: “Once again we had a very high standard of entries and it is fitting that we are able to recognise those who have gone the extra mile to improve and enhance the environment in County Durham.”

The awards are administered by Durham County Council on behalf of the County Durham Environment Partnership.

The sponsors of this year’s awards were Groundwork North East, Sita UK, Banks Group Durham Wildlife Trust, Northern Powergrid, Livin (formerly Sedgefield Borough Homes) and English Heritage.
