Airport City project director resigns after ten months

The director of the Airport City project in Manchester, Karen Campbell, has left her post after just ten months,

She joined Manchester Airports Group at the start of the year to lead the £800m scheme at Manchester Airport.

Now she is understood to have left her position last week, citing “health and personal reasons”. She will relocate back to London, and John Atkins, MAG’s property director will take on her responsibilities in the short-term.

Confirmation of her departure comes just after the announcement of the joint-venture that will develop the flagship project, set to create 16,000 jobs in the coming years.

A MAG Property spokesman said: “Karen Campbell resigned from the position of Airport City director, effective October 7 2013, for health and personal reasons and will be relocating back to London.

“Since joining us, Karen has significantly contributed to the development and promotion of Airport City, working closely with our customers and partners.

“In the interim, John Atkins, MAG’s Property Director, will assume Karen’s Airport City responsibilities.”

It was announced in China on Sunday that the Beijing Construction Engineering Group will form a joint-venture with MAG, the Greater Manchester Pension Fund and Carillion for the project.

Argent, the firm behind the One St Peter’s Square scheme in Manchester city centre, has been named development manager but does not have a stake in the J-V.

It is hoped the deal will lead to further inward invest from the Far East and pave the way for a direct flight between Manchester and China to be set up.
