C.F. Booth increases sales and profits

Rotherham’s C.F. Booth, one of the largest independent recycling companies in Europe, has seen sales figures rise by more than £36 million in a year, from £236.9 million to £273.3 million.

Profits for the year ending March 2012 were £3.8m, up from £3.2m in 2011.

The company specialises in metal recycling and metal ingot manufacturing of both ferrous and non ferrous metals for UK import and export. Established in 1920, it grew from a local metal trader with investment in staff, technology and equipment putting it at the leading edge of the industry where it met the ever growing global demand for recycled metals. Its range of services includes specialist forms of scrap metal recycling and the trading and processing of all grades of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. Last year, C.F. Booth won the Queen’s Award for International Trade for an outstanding performance over the last three years. Export sales are over 50% of turnover, well in excess of industry sector averages and the firm secured £148m in international sales for the period ended March 2012. Its Clarence Metal Works on Armer Street is thought to be the largest scrapyard in Europe and the firm employs 346 staff. .

The company’s recent performance has seen it ranked 91st in the latest Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 - up from 161st place last year.

David Maxwell, partner at Grant Thornton, praised the mid-market leaders. He said: “It is great to see private mid-sized businesses making such a positive contribution to the UK economy. “Impressive leadership is ensuring they prosper despite tough trading conditions, with many companies expanding through their international operations and all making sure they retain and engage talented people in the UK.”
