Sunderland International Airshow nominated for prestigious award
THE EVENT Company that creates and manages major events in Sunderland will be flying the flag for the city at the region’s biggest tourism awards next month.
Sunderland International Airshow, organised by Sunderland Live, has been nominated for the Tourism Event of the Year Award at the North East England Tourism Awards 2013.
Formed in April 2013, Sunderland Live is the team behind some of the biggest and most popular events in the region including Sunderland Festival at Herrington Country Park, Houghton Feast, Sunderland International Airshow and the Roker Park Lights.
Chris Alexander, Sunderland Live’s Chief Operating Officer, said; “We’re thrilled that the Sunderland International Airshow has been shortlisted for the North East Tourism awards. We have some tough competition from other nominees including The Ashes and Lindisfarne Gospels in Durham and The Late Shows in Newcastle Gateshead, but it’s fantastic to be in such esteemed company with other prestigious events.
“This year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Sunderland International Airshow, which was a huge success, attracting over 850,000 people to Roker and Seaburn in July to enjoy live music, family entertainment and spectacular flying displays over the North Sea.”
Highlights of the event included a rare evening display from the Red Arrows, one of the world’s premier aerobatic teams, a dazzling fireworks display in Cliffe Park and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which paid tribute to the aviators of World War II.
The North East England Tourism Awards will take place on 21 November at St James’ Park and will be hosted by BBC Look North presenter, Carol Malia. Winners will also have the chance to compete nationally against winners from other regions at the Visit England Awards for Excellence next year.
