Sunderland Echo print factory up for sale
The iconic former home of Sunderland Echo’s print factory and office space, visibile driving south on the A19 at Washington, is for sale
Echo House, which has been the head office and printing facilities for the newspaper since 1976, is being sold by Naylors Chartered Surveyors.
It has come to the market following a decision by regional newspaper publisher, Johnston Press, to move the production of its North East titles to Sheffield.
Keith Stewart, director at Naylors commented: ’Echo House is an iconic property which can be readily seen from a considerable distance when driving south on the A19 at Washington, due to its height. Its location is perfect logistically however the existing facility may not be ideal for a lot of end users.
“That said, given the size of the site and the mix of office and industrial space it offers, it could be used and or converted to create something bespoke – whether that be from an owner occupier, developer or investor.”
The property is located within the Pennywell Industrial Estate adjacent to the A19, offering excellent communication links to all parts of the region. It is just a few miles from the main Nissan manufacturing plant and neighbouring occupiers include Calsonic Kansei, Argus Powderbend and Dewhirst Group.
Northeast Press are now looking for new premises and say they intend to stay in Sunderland. Stephen Plews, managing director commented: “We are looking for more suitable premises in the Sunderland area. We remain committed to Sunderland and the North East, and firmly believe that remaining close to our readers and advertisers is key to our business and ongoing success.”
Echo House is for sale through agents Naylors Chartered Surveyors and Rapleys LLP at an asking price of £850,000.
