ICE launches search for North East excellence

Civil engineers working in the North East are being urged to nominate projects for a celebration of the industry in the region. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has launched the 2014 Robert Stephenson Awards, its latest annual celebration of excellence.

Presented at the ICE North East Annual Dinner, the Robert Stephenson Awards recognise the talent within the region, highlight the work produced by local construction workers and designers from companies or organisations based in North East England.

The 2014 winners will be announced at the ICE North East Dinner, on May 1, 2014 at the Newcastle Marriott Hotel Gosforth Park.

Prizes will be presented by the President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in two categories, projects valued less and greater than £4million. Projects considered outstanding may receive a special award at the discretion of the judges.

Any submissions for the awards must be entered by Friday 24 January 2014. However, notification of intent to enter must be received by Friday 13 December 2013.

Award winners in the recent past have included the New Tyne Crossing, the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec), Blyth, TCT2 New Container Terminal Facility at Teesport, Middlesbrough, and the transformation works at North Shields Western Fish Quay refurbishment.

Derek Smith, ICE North East awards scheme secretary said: “Every year, we get an opportunity to celebrate excellence in our industry, here in the North East. It is not only the landmark projects which are heralded, such as new river crossings, we get an opportunity to celebrate the work which goes into keeping our region working, such as waterworks. We are very excited to hear from civil engineers and clients in the region who have achieved things they are proud of and worth of celebrating.”
